• How we began.
W Robinson & Son started in 1860, when our founder, William Robinson, established the nursery on the very same site we occupy today. In those early years the smallholding produced a wide range of crops soft fruit, apples, plums, pears, onions, leeks and all the traditional vegetables of the time. Alongside cows and horses that supported the work on the land.
• 2nd Generation.
The next generation, also William Robinson, transformed the future of the nursery by improving the size and quality of onions and leeks. Through careful selection allowing only the finest specimens to seed he developed the large strains that soon became known as Mammoth. His successes on the local Flower Show circuit attracted great interest, and other exhibitors quickly wanted to grow these remarkable vegetables. From this demand, the vegetable business as we know it today was born. Many of the unusual and heritage varieties we still grow trace their origins back to these pioneering days.
• 3rd Generation
During the 1950s and 60s, the third generation, William Martin Robinson, brought the Mammoth strains to national prominence. His achievements were recognised with the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour in 1979 and a Fellowship of the Institute of Horticulture in 1986. He played a key role in founding the National Vegetable Society, serving for many years as both Chairman and President.
In 1972, all Mammoth varieties were officially registered under EU rules as distinct, allowing them to be sold throughout Europe.
• Into the 21st Century.
Today, the nursery is proudly run by the fourth and fifth generations. Continuing the family tradition of producing vegetables that taste every bit as good as they look. We remain a true family business, still rooted on the land where our ancestors began more than 160 years ago.
Our exhibition ground is prepared using natural products and the same formula developed all those years ago. Every seed and plant is grown with natural predators rather than chemical sprays. Reflecting our long-standing commitment to sustainable, traditional methods.
