Strawberry Mint

Mentha × piperita

Strawberry mint is a frost-hardy, herbaceous perennial. Unlike many other mints, it grows more compactly and is rather small with a height of 30 to 50cm. The leaves of strawberry mint are also relatively small, have toothed edges and are slightly wrinkled.

The leaves of the Strawberry Mint Plant have a distinct flavour which blends the sweetness of strawberries with the coolness of mint.

They can be used to add a refreshing twist to a variety of dishes, from salads to desserts, and can even be used to make a delicious and refreshing tea.

When plants have finished flowering in summer, cut flowered shoots back to 5cm (2in) above the surface of the compost. Mint can be vigorous in the garden so unless you want a big clump, you can contain it by planting it in a large pot. Do keep it well watered though.

Strawberry mint leaves can add an awesome twist to a range of beverages. One way to use them is in a refreshing summer drink. Simply steep these aromatic leaves in cold water overnight for a subtle and rejuvenating drink. Another option is to incorporate them into tea. Add a few leaves to green or black tea for a burst of flavour that melds the sweetness of strawberries with the coolness of mint, creating a harmonious balance.

This herb dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
